Week 8 - You Tube

Now this really feels like playing.....looking at You Tube while at work. Thanks!

This clip is one that I saw at a conference in June and it really clicked for me. I have been sent it since the conference which shows how information flows.

There are so many different uses for video clips and You Tube is a tremendous clearinghouse for them. In the Literacy Dept. we have started thinking about how video could reach people needing support with their reading very effectively on the TPL website. It is something that we will explore.

This leads me to another You Tube clip that I found....the Web 2.0 Manifesto. We need to keep this spirit going once the 23 Things training is done. I have been talking it up with colleagues and non-library folk. This type of training is infectious and needs to be shared. Move over 'Move that Mouse' make room for 'Web 2.0 Mania'.

Week 7 Assignment

I feel like we are playing when we take this course. And I am a firm believer in play and fun.

I have signed up for a few podcasts (a CBC one, a fitness motivational one and another that escapes me right now). It is good to have them through the RSS feed site because it is yet another reason to go there each day. I have always tried to keep up with 'my' environmental scan of topics of interest and these tools help with this task.

Thanks for another good week!

Assignment #6

I like the potential of google.docs.

It makes me wonder if it makes sense to put all the shared Indonesia documents here for easiest access?

This may be a better way for my brother and I to share 'cottage' documents than the blog.

In terms of sharing documents at TPL, with the shift to I-net and away from the shared drive...this may be a more accessible way of working on documents as a work team. I am not sure if the organization is nimble enough to make a shift like this. Thoughts of all the guidelines, permissions and protocols dance through my head.

Gotta keep learning what's out there.

Assignment #5

I was surprised to hear that we are halfway through this training. I am really enjoying it. Enjoying the unexpected aspects....the fact that there is a community of 23 Things trainees at TPL, that almost all of the staff in our Dept. are participating and using the new skills in different ways and most of all learning.

I had scanned this assignment this morning and just made a mental note about del.icio.us. Imagine my surprise when I was doing a websearch for another projects and google (egads - do I confess here that I am a google searcher?!) delivered some del.icio.us sites.

So, while having lunch at my computer (another bad habit I know) I doodled around the del.ici.ous site and got a few things going on. I was happy to see that 2 of the sites I listed have several hundred OR thousand listings. I like the 'popular' and 'recent' buttons as a method of discovering what is on the wave ahead.

I feel that I am transitioning from being a basic net user to being a little bit more on the edge of its potential. I started a new blog to help monitor the sharing and use of our family cottage. I will work on this one with my brother in the U.K.

Looking forward to next week. Still having a ton-o-fun with the photo site.

Assignment #4

This is so much fun. The mind reels at one can do with this photo fun stuff.

With just a little time I was able to make 2 neat things with some photos....how do you like this magazine cover?
Katherine and I get a lot of feedback from this particular photo. It looks like there are elephants all over Indonesia, and there may well be, but we just saw this one and it was a tourist attraction where you could pay to ride on the elephant. We just took it as a great photo opp, which it was.

My other creative play combined two of my favourite things...my 7 up collection and Andy Warhol. If you are familiar with Warhol's work you'll recall that he worked with the Coca Cola bottle...in my tribute to him I am using 7-Up and my favourite bubble up lady iconography.
My son is an Andy fan and I am already thinking of great things I can make for Christmas with this particular photo site. I like that you can link Flickr to this site and get at all of your pics...so cool.

I went to the Blues site and found that my Blues name is `Hollerin'´ Estelle Hamlin. Not so sure I get the point of it but I went on to the mega generator site and had a ton-o-fun. Feel like rambling down this street?
I found other things on the Generator site that tickled my fancy...like a site where you could write a letter to your child from the toothfairy OR the Will Ferrel movie plot generator site. I think I will keep visiting the mega generator blog when I need a little creative uplifting. Fun fun fun.

Assignment #3

I was glad to learn about RSS feeds for this assignment. It had been an acronym that I had read and heard bandied about. I had a rudimentary understanding of it am glad that 23 Things encouraged me to learn more.

I have subscribed to several feeds. The challenge will be to add Bloglines to my daily web visits.

I chose the following feeds:
Blog Line top links - I thought this would be a good way to keep up to date.
Blog Line News - this may have been an automatic one. It will help me get more familiar with Blog Line's features.
Boing Boing - I think I heard this one referenced at a conference. My curiousity made me subscribe. It is a combination of weird and wonderful facts.
Libary Journal News - as requested.
Salon - I want to be more well rounded in my current events.
The Shifted Librarian - again, the professional curiousity.

I think I would be more inclined to follow RSS feeds if they came directly into my in-box. I will aim to make visiting Bloglines one of my daily activities.

Happy Thanksgiving.

23 Things - Assignment #2

I am a bit behind on this as I got sick last week. But I'm back and catching up.

I already have a flicker site, which I use to share pictures from Indonesia. I want to get more comfortable with that. I didn't find Photobucket all that different but all of these things take time to tinker around with. I have canceled cable at home and will spend more time at the computer screen there.

I have uploaded a picture of a 7 Up bottle...I collect 7-Up stuff and like the old stuff best. I have a brown bottle similar to this one but without the bubble-up lady. My bottle is older I think and I have been told that only 7 states had permission to bottle in the brown bottles. Hey...I could get a whole new 7-Up blog going here.

The other images I selected were related to literacy and libraries. I like the old library photos and am always on the look-out for literacy images.

So I will keep this post short and sweet and get the images loaded.
